Nigeria's military has warned of a new insurgent group, Lakurawas, infiltrating the country's northwest region from neighbouring Niger and Mali, its spokesperson said on Thursday. Defense spokesperson Edward Buba, a Major-General, said the group, an affiliate of militias operating in the Sahel region, has been active in northwest Sokoto and Kebbi states. The ideology of the group is not known. "They began an incursion into northern parts of Sokoto and Kebbi states from the Niger and Mali axis, particularly after the coup in Niger Republic," Buba said in statement. The influx of Lakurawas is linked to the July 2023 coup…
Not fewer than 100 people, including women, children, and elderly men, were kidnapped by rampaging bandits in Zamfara communities near Gusau, the state capital. The community’s Chief Imam, who was previously released from captivity and was receiving treatment for a leg injury, was among the victims. This marks the second time the Chief Imam has been abducted, according to residents of the locality. Meanwhile, the state authorities in Zamfara and the police have not issued a statement concerning the latest incident. A survivor spoke to the BBC Hausa Service in an interview monitored on Wednesday, recounting how the affected communities…

“Pig butchering" operations run out of Asia but target victims globally, with scammers promising love and wealth to get their victims to invest their fortunes. The scam often starts simply with an unsolicited text message. Reported U.S. losses from investment scams totaled over $3.3 billion last year, according to the FBI, but experts say many victims are too embarrassed to report their losses. The road to Kaimi's ruin started in December, with an Instagram message about a Japanese monkey from a handsome stranger who called himself Mike. Over the coming months "Mike" and Kaimi would develop a friendship that quickly…

The NSA condemned and rained curses on the security personnel who facilitate…
The management of Air Peace Limited, Nigeria’s largest airline company, on Sunday, said the ongoing legal proceedings against its founder, Allen Onyema, and Chief of Finance and Administration, Ejiro Eghagha, will not affect the safety, reliability, and daily operations of the airline. As widely reported, the United States government has added more charges to the $20 million bank fraud case against Onyema, the CEO of Air Peace, as the Nigerian businessman continues to evade trial in an American court. Although Onyema has denied wrongdoing, he is wanted in the US over the bank fraud charges filed against him and a…
Allen Onyema, chief executive officer (CEO) of Air Peace, has been charged by the US for alleged obstruction of justice. In a superseding indictment, the US attorney’s office, Northern District of Georgia, said Onyema and Ejiroghene Eghagha, the Air Peace’s chief of administration and finance, allegedly submitted false documents to end a federal investigation against them. Onyema and Eghagha have been under investigation for alleged money laundering since 2019. While the Air Peace CEO is accused of moving more than $20 million from Nigeria through US bank accounts in a scheme involving “false documents” to purchase airplanes, Eghagha is said…
John Tsoho, the chief judge of the federal high court (FHC), has reassigned the case of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), back to Binta Nyako. On September 24, Nyako recused herself from the case after an oral application made by Kanu. “I hereby recuse myself and remit the case file back to the chief judge,” Nyako had said. However, Tsoho has reverted the file to Nyako on the ground that Kanu’s application must be brought formally before the court through a motion on notice. It is expected that the application must also be served…
