In June, a few dozen activists started meeting regularly at a seaside tented camp in Colombo for hours-long sessions to think up ways to revive Sri Lanka's flagging protest movement. The group, which included a Catholic priest, a digital strategist and a popular playwright, succeeded beyond their wildest hopes. Within weeks, hundreds of thousands of people descended on Colombo. After initially clashing with police, protesters occupied key government buildings and residences, forcing President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his prime minister to promise to step down. "I'm still trying to process it," said Chameera Dedduwage, a digital strategist at a major advertising…
Kuje, a satellite town housing over 97,367 people — according to the 2006 census — and a correctional facility in Abuja, was hit by gunmen on the night of June 5. About 300 Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) insurgents launched an attack on the Kuje medium correctional facility. An operative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) securing the prison was killed, as well as four inmates. At a media briefing at the facility, Bashir Magashi, minister of defence, said 64 Boko Haram inmates escaped. The Nigerian prison system has three classifications based on security arrangement:…
President Muhammadu Buhari says he is eager to hand over to his successor because “it’s been tough”. The president said this while receiving some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators and political leaders at his residence in Daura, Katsina State, on Monday. The President travelled to Daura on Friday ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations. Buhari told his guests to be mindful in helping the many Nigerians that were looking for opportunities. “By this time next year, I would have made the most out of the two terms, and the remaining months I will do my best,”” he said.…
President Muhammadu Buhari has asked the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reconsider its stance on its ongoing strike. The president said this on Monday in his address when some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators and political leaders visited him at his residence in Daura, Katsina. ASUU is currently on strike over the federal government’s failure to honour an agreement on issues bordering on funding of universities, as well as salaries and allowances of lecturers. Speaking on the development, Buhari said the strike had already taken a toll on parents, students and other stakeholders. “I hope…
Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s inability to curtail rising cases of kidnapping, killing and terrorists’ attacks have exposed his ineffective leadership. The group in a statement, yesterday, by its Secretary General, Murtala Aliyu, expressed regret over the level of insecurity, particularly in the Northern region, saying supporters of Buhari must tell him the truth about ugly happenstance in the country, and not only what sweetens his ears. “Over the past few months, the security crises we face in Nigeria has been deepening and there is a dangerous escalation of violence and bloodshed. Criminal gangs, heavily armed…
India is on track to overtake China as the planet's most populous country next year, according to a U.N. report published on Monday. The report, from the population division of the U.N.'s Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said China and India were each home to over 1.4 billion people in 2022. "India is projected to surpass China as the world's most populous country during 2023," the U.N. said. The Indian government's census for 2011 put the country's population at more than 1.2 billion. "The global human population will reach 8.0 billion in mid-November 2022 from an estimated 2.5 billion…
The lower house of the Russian parliament will gather on July 15 for an extraordinary session, its council decided on Monday, just days after President Vladimir Putin warned that he had not even started to get serious in the war in Ukraine. Putin used a meeting with parliamentary leaders on Thursday to dare the United States and its allies to try to defeat Russia in Ukraine, which Russia invaded on Feb. 24. Parliamentary leaders all thanked Putin for his decisions. The Russian parliament, dominated by a party which always supports Putin, listed some amendments on competition and information policy that…
A U.S. appeals court on Friday said Exxon Mobil Corp and Royal Dutch Shell Plc affiliates may try to enforce part of a $1.8 billion arbitration award against Nigeria's state-run oil company, in a dispute concerning oil extraction near the African country's coastline. In a 3-0 decision, the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan said a lower court judge erred in rejecting the entire October 2011 award, which by 2018 had grown to $2.67 billion including interest, against Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. It said the judge should have determined which parts of the award had been deemed enforceable…
Rescuers picked through the rubble of an apartment building in eastern Ukraine searching for two dozen people, including a child, feared trapped after a Russian rocket strike on the five-storey building killed 15 people. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's chief of staff, Andriy Yermak, said the attack in the town of Chasiv Yar in the Donetsk region was "another terrorist attack" and Russia should be designated as a state sponsor of terrorism. Rescuers used a crane to lift a concrete slab and their hands to dig through the debris on Sunday, while dazed residents who survived the Saturday evening attack retrieved personal…
