The battle for the Ukrainian city of Sievierodonetsk is brutal and will determine the fate of the Donbas region, said the country's president, as Russian troops lay waste to the city in an assault aimed at controlling eastern Ukraine. After failing to take control of the capital Kyiv, the Kremlin says it is now seeking to completely "liberate" Ukraine's breakaway Donbas where Russian-backed separatists broke away from Ukrainian government control in 2014. Around a third of the Donbas was held by the separatists before the Feb. 24 invasion. "This is a very brutal battle, very tough, perhaps one of the…
Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) has expressed concerns that states are not coming forth with their counterpart funds to access the annual matching grant to develop their basic education system. The commission said it was particularly concerned that about N110 billion of the intervention funds accessed from UBEC were not utilised by states as of 2021 with the money left in the coffers of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs). It has, however, earmarked N2 billion for the proposed national personnel audit of all basic education institutions in the country. Executive Secretary of UBEC, Hamid Bobboyi, disclosed the personnel audit…

Ukrainian forces struggled to hold their ground in bloody street-to-street fighting in the eastern frontline city of Sievierodonetsk as President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the situation was difficult, also pledging to retake Russia's gains. The days-long battle for the industrial city has emerged as pivotal, with Russia focusing its offensive might in the hope of achieving one of its stated aims - to fully capture surrounding Luhansk province on behalf of Russian-speaking separatists. "We have to achieve a full deoccupation of our entire territory," Zelenskiy said by video link at an event hosted by Britain's Financial Times newspaper on Tuesday. Asked…
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Ukrainian troops were engaged in fierce street fighting with Russian soldiers in the industrial city of Sievierodonetsk, a pivotal battle in the Kremlin's attempt to control the eastern Donbas region. "Our heroes do not give up positions in Sievierodonetsk. In the city, fierce street fighting continues," Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address on Monday. "And the Ukrainian Donbas stands, stands strong," he added referring to the region where Sievierodonetsk is located. It was unclear which side had the upper hand, with "the situation changing from hour to hour", Oleksandr Stryuk, head of administration in Sievierodonetsk,…
Following the perennial power outages currently being experienced across the country; findings have shown that 20 gas power plants are currently under-performing, leading to power generation dropping below 2,000MW. Nigeria has 23 power generating plants with 11,165MW capacity connected to the national grid. These plants are managed by generation companies (GenCos), independent power providers, and Niger Delta Holding Company. Out of the 23, two are hydro plants. Independent investigations by The PUNCH showed that the gas plants are currently either generating below expectations, shut down due to lack of gas, or undergoing maintenance. Investigations further showed that the affected plants…
Nigeria has shelved plans to raise about $950 million selling overseas bonds, owing to unfavorable market conditions during the time-frame approved for the fund raising, Finance Minister Zainab Ahmed said. Ahmed said in April that the government planned to sell as early as May its second external debt this year to help plug fiscal deficits. The planned $950 million bond sale would account for the balance of $6.1 billion overseas borrowing planned for 2021, after it raised the second tranche of $1.25 billion in March. “We were not able to do that because the market pricing was not good and…

Russia struck Ukraine's capital Kyiv with missiles early on Sunday for the first time in more than a month, while Ukrainian officials said a counter-attack on the main battlefield in the east had retaken half of the city of Sievierodonetsk. Dark smoke could be seen from many miles away after the attack on two outlying districts of Kyiv. Ukraine said the strike hit a rail car repair workshop, while Moscow said it had destroyed tanks sent by Eastern European countries to Ukraine.
