Ghana holds election amid economic turmoil

Ghana holds a presidential and parliamentary election on Saturday (today) amid hopes for an economic revival after the worst financial crisis in a generation, which led to a major debt default in the West African nation. President Nana Akufo-Addo is stepping down next month after serving the two terms allowed by the constitution in Ghana, the world's second-largest cocoa producer and a significant gold producer. Twelve candidates are vying to succeed him, but the race is seen as primarily between Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, chosen successor of Akufo-Addo's New Patriotic Party (NPP), and former President John Dramani Mahama of the…
Ahmad Gumi, a Kaduna-based Islamic cleric, has backed President Bola Tinubu’s tax reform bills, saying the proposed laws are a wake-up call to northern Nigerian leaders to develop their region. Gumi said the tax reform bills would create more opportunities in the economy than the existing tax system, which promotes multiple taxation. The cleric stated this on two different occasions on Tuesday and Wednesday in Kaduna. The videos of the conversation were posted on his Facebook page. The bills are the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, 2024 -SB.583; the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, 2024- SB.584; and the…

Nandi-Ndaitwah, 72, is the current vice president. Her victory will extend SWAPO's 34 years in power since it led Namibia to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. She received roughly 57% of valid votes in the presidential race, according to a breakdown given by the Electoral Commission of Namibia. Nandi-Ndaitwah needed to secure more than 50% of the votes to win. "The Namibian nation has voted for peace and stability,"…
The Chairman, Senate Committee on Ecology and Climate Change, Seriake Dickson (PDP, Bayelsa West), has said the National Assembly will pass the tax reform bills despite opposition from different quarters. Dickson, in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Monday, said the bills would be passed like the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), stressing that heavens would not fall when the tax bills are consequently passed. President Bola Tinubu had on October 3, 2024, transmitted to the National Assembly, four tax reform bills, in a letter, read by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajuddeen…

Northern Nigeria is seeing a surge in opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reform bills, with regional groups and political leaders condemning the measures as harmful to the economic interests of the North. The four bills—aimed at overhauling the country’s tax system—are currently under review in the National Assembly. However, their swift progression has sparked widespread anger in the northern states, with accusations that the reforms favor southern Nigeria, particularly Lagos, at the expense of the North’s economic stability. The bills—entitled the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration…
Enyinnaya Abaribe, senator representing Abia South, has stated that Nigeria would have been in a better state if Peter Obi, the Labour Party (LP) candidate, had won the 2023 presidential election. Speaking on Politics Today, a Channels Television program, Abaribe criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for its nepotism and uneven ministerial appointments. “If Peter Obi had won, you probably would have seen a better Nigeria than what we are seeing today,” Abaribe said. “He would not have been as nepotistic as this government. It’s not in him; he cares for everyone.” The senator pointed out what he described as…
Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently review his administration’s economic policies, citing the growing hardship faced by Nigerians. Bala Mohammed, chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and governor of Bauchi State, signed and presented the communiqué, expressing empathy for Nigerians enduring economic challenges under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government. “The forum empathises with Nigerians who are groaning under the oppressive…
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticized the President Bola Tinubu-led administration for the increasing pressure that loans are placing on Nigeria’s economy, describing the situation as “insufferable.” Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 elections, accused both the president and the National Assembly of pushing Nigeria deeper into debt. In a statement reacting to the government’s recent borrowing proposal, Atiku expressed concern over the World Bank’s report that named Nigeria as the third most indebted country to the International Development Association (IDA). He pointed to the government’s latest move to borrow an additional N1.7 trillion…
