Mourners were left stunned when an Indian man started moving just before his funeral - a day after he was declared dead by a hospital.

Mohammad Furqan, 20, was taken to a private infirmary in Lucknow on June 21 after an accident on Sultanpur Road and was pronounced dead on Monday.

An ambulance took him home to Indiranagar where preparations were being made for his funeral.

But just before Mr Furqan was buried, he started twitching and his surprised relatives rushed him to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi where he was put on oxygen.

He later had to be moved to a private medical centre in Indira Nagar due to a shortage of ventilators.

Mohammad Irfan, Mr Furqan's older brother told : 'Devastated, we were preparing for the burial when some of us saw movement in his limbs.

'We immediately took Furqan to the Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where the doctors said he was alive and have put him on ventilator support.

'We had paid Rs. 7 lakh (£80) to the private hospital earlier and when we told them that we had run out of money, they had declared Furqan dead on Monday.'

The doctor treating Mr Furqan added: 'The patient is in critical condition but definitely not brain dead.

'He has pulse, blood pressure and his reflexes are working. He has been put on ventilator support.'

Lucknow Chief Medical Officer Dr Narendra Agarwal said the incident will be investigated.
