British Prime Minister Theresa May survived a political crisis over her Brexit deal Wednesday, winning a no-confidence vote by Conservative lawmakers that would have ended her leadership of party and country. But the margin of victory — 200 votes to 117 — leaves May a weakened leader who has lost the support of a big chunk of her party over her handling of Britain’s exit from the European Union. It also came at a steep price as she promised not to run for re-election in 2022. Britain’s Brexit problem, meanwhile, remains unsolved as May seeks changes to her EU divorce…
Irrespective of President Muhammadu Buhari’s veto of Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill, 2018, Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has worked out strategies to deliver a free, fair and credible election in 2019, using enhanced smart card readers. Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill had incorporated card reader for the purpose of giving legal backup to the technology adopted in authenticating Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, of those eligible to vote. The absence of the card reader in the Electoral Act became an issue when the Supreme Court dismissed contentions against the election of some governors on the basis that the card readers deployed were…

President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Mr Samson Ayokunle, on Monday urged Nigerians to avoid desperate politicians by voting only credible candidates in 2019. Ayokunle made the remarks while briefing journalists after a meeting with representatives of 14 presidential candidates in Abuja, on their plans for Nigerians and the church. The ex-President said these in a statement by his media aide, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, made available to journalists in Abeokuta. National Christian Elders Forum, led by a former Minister of Defence, Mr Theophilus Danjuma and Mr Solomon Asemota, will meet on Monday (today) to take a position on whether or not it should endorse a presidential candidate among the ‘new entrants’ for 2019 elections. The Monday’s meeting follows an earlier one in Lagos which the forum held with those it described as “13 new presidential candidates.” The forum had earlier said that rather than propose “two evils” from which Nigerians should choose, righteousness should be the basis for a new President for the country in 2019. Secretary of NCEF, Mr…

A cross-section of senators, who spoke with our correspondents on the issue on Saturday, vowed to make Mr Buhari’s position a major issue on resumption of plenary on Tuesday. They vowed to ensure that all amendments made to the new electoral…
Barely two months to next year’s elections, some northern leaders say they will not support President Muhammadu Buhari’s re-election. They, however, shied away from announcing their preferred presidential candidate in the elections, insisting that the candidate to support remained one of their own from the list of 71 presidential hopeful cleared by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to contest 2019 elections. The only other high profile candidate in 2019 presidential election is Mr Atiku Abubakar of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Convener of Northern Elders’ Forum (NEF), Mr Ango Abdullahi, spoke the mind of northern leaders in Kaduna. However, three key…
