Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) have demanded compliance with the orders granting them access to inspect materials used for the February 25 presidential elections. A letter to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, by the PDP Legal Team signed by Joe-Kyari Gadzama on Friday, said since the Court of Appeal on March 3 and 8 granted access to materials used for the election, the commission has refused to comply. The appellate court panel led by Joseph Ikyegh had issued “an order allowing the PDP to carry out a forensic examination/analysis of the…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says political parties are not allowed to witness the backup or reconfiguration of the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) machines. Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), had sought an order of the court restraining the INEC from tampering with the information embedded in the BVAS machines until the due inspection was conducted and certified true copies (CTC) of them issued. But Tanimu Inuwa, counsel to the INEC, had assured that no information in the BVAS would be lost during the reconfiguration as all data would be transferred to the commission’s backend server.…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that it will appeal the Thursday’s ruling by the Federal High Court, Abuja, ordering it to allow the use of Temporary Voter Cards (TVC) in the March 18 governorship and state houses of assembly elections. Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, said this on Thursday night in Abuja. According to him, the commission is taking immediate steps to appeal against the judgement of the trial court. “INEC has been served a copy of the judgement delivered today (Thursday) by the Federal High Court, Abuja Division which ordered it to…
Ohanaeze Ndigbo, yesterday, asked lovers of democracy to intervene in the primitive and primordial display of wickedness and hate against Ndigbo in Nigeria. The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation regretted that while several Yoruba eminent people are lending noble hands for a better Nigeria, some miscreants and hoodlums are busy destroying the cordial relationship between Igbo and Yoruba by attacking their source of income and wellbeing. Ohanaeze, reacting to the Akere Auto-Spare Parts Market fire, dominated by Igbo in Lagos, on Wednesday, where goods worth billions of naira were destroyed, and the controversy trailing the death of a 65-year-old security guard…
An American university, the Massachusetts Institute Technology (MIT), has said the governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, attended the school. The management of the school told PREMIUM TIMES on Thursday that Rhodes-Vivour obtained a Master’s Degree in Architecture after studying at the institution between 2005 and 2008. The school was reacting to reports circulating on social media suggesting that the governorship candidate did not attend the university. Rhodes-Vivour has been at the centre of a certificate forgery allegation after an email that purportedly emanated from the office of the Registar of MIT appeared on…
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it has shifted the conduct of the governorship and houses of assembly elections to March 18. The elections were initially fixed to hold on March 11 across 24 states. On Wednesday, the court of appeal refused an application by Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), to restrain INEC from reconfiguring the bimodal voter accreditation system (BVAS) ahead of the governorship and state assembly elections. INEC, in a statement late Wednesday signed by Festus Okoye, INEC national commissioner and chairman, information and voter education committee, said while the ruling of the tribunal…
Chatham House, an independent policy institute based in London, has stated that from its analysis of the February 25 presidential election, it would appear that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to learn new lessons. The organisation stressed that the electoral umpire failed to adhere to its own guidelines, which it enunciated before the poll, especially the one bordering on the uploading of results in real-time. INEC had last Wednesday announced the former Lagos State governor as winner of the keenly contested presidential poll. However, the contending parties refused to accept the verdict of the electoral umpire. While the…
Olawale Rhodes-Vivour, father of the Labour Party governorship candidate in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, popularly called GRV, has said his son will bring character and solutions to governance in the state, saying that he is an activist and not a politician. Olawale said this while speaking at a press conference in Lagos on Wednesday. He described the 40-year-old politician as solution-driven and a go-getter, who is always trying to challenge the status quo and bring changes. He said, “I want to speak a little about Gbadebo. I know that definitely I’m biased, but I’ll stick with facts. I’m not talking…
The Court of Appeal in Abuja, on Wednesday, granted INEC permission to reconfigure the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) machines used for the 25 February presidential and National Assembly elections across the country. A three-member panel of the appellate court led by Joseph Ikyegh granted permission to the electoral body to reconfigure the machines ahead of Saturday’s governorship and Houses of Assembly elections across the 36 states of the federation.
