INEC to spend N355bn on 2023 general elections, others

Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, yesterday, revealed that the electoral umpire would spend N355 billion in the 2023 general elections. Already, N305 billion has been approved by the lawmakers. However, the electoral body said it has budgeted another N50 billion for its annual budget in 2023, an increment of N10 billion compared to 2022 budget which was N40 billion as approved by the National Assembly. Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has filed a suit before a federal high court in Abuja seeking the sack of all national working committee (NWC) members of the All Progressives Congress (APC). INEC: Registered voters now 93.5m with the following demographics

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says the preliminary number of registered voters in Nigeria is 93.5 million. Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairman, said this on Wednesday at the third quarterly meeting with political parties. Following the suspension of continuous voter registration (CVR) on July 31, the number of persons who completed their registration was announced to be 12,298,944. Yakubu, however, said after cleaning up the voter data using the automated biometric identification system (ABIS), a total of 2,780,756 (22.6 percent) were identified as ineligible registrants and invalidated from the record. Rivers APC will not contest 2023 elections as court nullifies all primaries

A federal high court sitting in Port Harcourt, the Rivers capital, has nullified primaries conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state. 25 states refused to vote on constitution amendment bills. These are their demands

Only 11 of Nigeria’s 36 state legislatures have considered and voted on the 44 constitution amendment bills passed by the National Assembly earlier in the year. The states whose houses of assembly have voted on the bills are Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kogi, Lagos, Ogun and Osun states.
