PRESS RELEASE We read with amusement the endorsement of Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential Candidate by former President Olusegun Obasanjo in his New Year message on Sunday. Following calls by journalists from various media houses who asked for our reaction we decided to make this preliminary statement, though we didn't consider the so-called endorsement to be of any value. We respect the democratic right of Obasanjo to support and endorse any candidate of his choice in any election. Except that he made it known formally in his new year message, any discerning political watcher in Nigeria knows that Obasanjo’s…
Happy New Year! May all our national calamities disappear this year. I am constrained to write this letter to all Nigerians especially young Nigerians, friends of Nigeria globally as well as our development partners because of the gravity; responsibility and implications of the collective decision Nigerians, both young and old, wil be making within the next two months. The last seven and a half years have no doubt been eventful and stressful years for many Nigerians. We have moved from frying pan to fire and from mountain top to the valley. Our leaders have done their best, but their best…
Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, the Fulani socio-cultural group, has given reasons for endorsing the political ambition of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu in the 2023 presidential election. At a meeting held in Lafia, Nassarawa State, yesterday, President of the association, Bello Bodejo, said that it was to ensure that herders were not sidelined in the scheme of things. He added that it was to also keep the presidential candidate abreast of their previous demands from the Federal government. He said: “We consulted widely with our people and other stakeholders. We harvested their views, contributions and…
Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Tuesday announced Akin Osuntokun, a former aide to President Olusegun Obasanjo, as the new Director General of his campaign council. Osuntokun replaced former DG of the Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation, Doyin Okupe, who announced his resignation in a letter last Tuesday following a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja that convicted him of violating the Money Laundering Act. The letter was addressed personally to the presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Rising from a strategic meeting of the party, which had Obi, members of the National Working Committee and several political candidates…
A presidential pre-election opinion poll commissioned by Anap Foundation, a non-profit organisation, has placed Peter Obi of the Labour Party as the leading candidate. The poll results, released on Wednesday, projected that Obi is ahead among four leading candidates for the 2023 presidential election. The three other candidates are Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP). The result of the poll, which was conducted in December, showed that 23 percent of respondents proposed to vote for Obi if the election was…

Doyin Okupe resigns from Peter Obi’s campaign

A day after his conviction for money laundering, Doyin Okupe, Tuesday announced his withdrawal from the campaign of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party. Until his conviction and eventual resignation, Okupe, 70, was the Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Organisation. He announced his resignation on Tuesday evening using his well-known Twitter handle. “It’s time to step aside. But I am with PO and the Obidients and the Presidential Campaigns till God gives us victory in Jesus Name (sic),” tweeted Okupe, reiterating his support for Mr Obi (“PO”) and supporters (“Obidients”). In a letter attached to…
No one in Nigerian history has run for president more times than Atiku Abubakar. The top prize has eluded him on each occasion. In February, the former vice-president will make his sixth attempt as Nigerians choose a replacement for outgoing president Muhammadu Buhari. This time, political aides and analysts say, the complicated electoral maths of Africa’s largest economy may count in his favour. “It is a life-long ambition and as long as I’m alive and strong and healthy, I will continue pursuing it,” Abubakar told the Financial Times at his suite in one of Lagos’s most luxurious hotels after a…
Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has said millions of northerners who have obtained their Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) are selling them to politicians for less than N2,000. A statement yesterday by the Director Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said the electorate and especially women, were being deceived to sell their PVCs for less than N2,000, an action he described as a ploy to disenfranchise some Nigerians in the North. Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had said politicians were buying PVCs from registered voters to harvest their Voter Identification Numbers (VIN) ahead of the elections NEF said irrespective of which…

Who; me, Senate? Never! - El- Rufai

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State has explained why he would never contest election to the Senate to become a lawmaker like some of his colleagues in the country. He said he does not have the patience to function in that capacity, adding that a lawmaker requires hard work, unlike the executive where decisions could be taken with the right to hire and fire. El-Rufai spoke at the Distinguished Parliamentarians Lecture 2022 organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in Abuja on Monday. He was the Chairman of the event. “The legislature is one I know…
PRESS RELEASE South West Development Stakeholders Forum, comprising civil society organisations, professionals, and religious leaders met on Thursday, 8th December 2022.
