Islamic militants have stormed a hotel in Somalia’s capital, engaging in an hours-long exchange of fire with the security forces that left at least 20 people dead, according to police and witnesses. Losses arising from cryptocurrency hacks jumped nearly 60% in the first seven months of the year to $1.9 billion, propelled by a surge in funds stolen from decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, according to a blog post from blockchain analysis firm Chainalysis released on Tuesday. Nasarawa State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Yakubu Lawal, has been kidnapped. Lawal was reportedly kidnapped from his residence in Nasarawa Eggon by unknown gunmen late Monday night after sporadic shootings. A family source, who did not want his name mentioned, confirmed the incident, saying that the gunmen who whisked the Commissioner away were heavily armed. A Federal High Court in Abuja has sentenced a kidnap kingpin, Hamisu Bala, also known as Wadume, and two others, to seven years’ imprisonment. Binta Nyako convicted Wadume of two of the 13-count charges against him and two others.
