APC fixes date for national convention

Mai Mala Buni, national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has confirmed February 26 as the ruling party’s convention date. Buni made the announcement on Tuesday at the National Progressive Women’s Conference in Abuja. The Yobe state governor said the women in the APC played a key role in the success of the party’s recent membership drive. He said: “The party under my stewardship conducted membership registration and revalidation exercise. We found it expedient to constitute a special committee on women and youth before the commencement of the exercise. The roles you played made the membership registration and revalidation…
Organising the vote is a vital part of winning or losing an election. But the job of organising the vote takes place well before the day of election. I have been a part of organising two successful election campaigns. And I can tell you for free that preparing the minds of the voters is a more important task than how they use their ballot papers on election day. So, get your voters card but know that the ones who are now saying that there are no polling booths on social media do not know what they are talking about. Pressure,…
Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) has asked political parties in the country to zone its presidential ticket to the south. In a communique issued after a meeting on Thursday in Abuja, the forum warned that any party that does not zone its ticket to the south should not expect support from the regions. The communique was jointly signed by Edwin Clark, an Ijaw national leader; Ayo Adebanjo, Afenifere leader; George Obiozor, president-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo; and Pogu Bitrus, national president, Middle Belt Forum. The forum repeated its stand that the 1999 constitution is flawed and lopsided and therefore,…
Former presidential candidate, Oby Ezekwesili has said that only Nigerian voters have the power to say no to incompetent leadership in the country. The former minister was reacting to the announcement of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, that he would be running for the presidency in 2023. Ezekwesili said, "It is citizens that have the power to collectively tell the likes of Bola Tinubu that the season of lowest common denominator of political leaders doing “turn-by-turn” incompetent governance of Nigeria is over. "The question is, “are citizens ready to collectively do so? "A country like Nigeria cannot…
Bola Tinubu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says he has informed President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to contest the presidency in the 2023 general election. Tinubu spoke to state house correspondents on Monday after a meeting with Buhari at the presidential villa. The former governor of Lagos, who has been in the news in recent times over calls for him to contest, however said he is still consulting on the matter. “I’ve informed the president of my intention but I have not informed Nigerians yet. I’m still consulting. And I have no problem consulting. I’ve not…
Peoples Democratic Party stalwart, Bode George, has described the presidential ambition of All Progressives Congress leader, Bola Tinubu, as a huge joke. George said this during a chat with The PUNCH on Monday while reacting to Tinubu’s decision to inform President Muhammadu Buhari of his intention to contest. “This so-called ambition must be a huge joke. The Presidency of Nigeria is not for characters like Tinubu. Look at how he mismanaged the resources of Lagos State. It is surprising that he can even dream of becoming the President of Nigeria. He is living in cuckoo land,” said George. The former…
President Muhammadu Buhari has withheld his assent to the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2021. In a letter to the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, and read by AriseTV News monitored in Abuja, the president said prevailing situation in the country would not allow him sign the bill. Amongst other reasons he cited include high cost of conducting direct primaries, the security challenge of monitoring the election, violation of citizens rights, and marginalisation of small political parties. Buhari also noted that adopting direct primaries has implications on the rights of citizens to participate in the government, as constitutionally insured. The president said…
A leftist millennial who rose to prominence during anti-government protests was elected Chile’s next president Sunday after a bruising campaign against a free-market firebrand likened to Donald Trump. With 56% of the votes, Gabriel Boric handily defeated by more than 10 points lawmaker José Antonio Kast, who tried unsuccessfully to scare voters that his young, inexperienced opponent would upend Chile’s vaunted record as Latin America’s most stable, advanced economy. In a model of democratic civility that broke from the polarizing rhetoric of the campaign, Kast immediately recognized defeat, tweeting a photo of himself on the phone with his opponent congratulating…
Iyorchia Ayu, national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says the President Muhammadu Buhari administration has failed Nigerians. Ayu spoke on Friday during the inauguration ceremony to usher in the newly-elected national working committee (NWC). He said PDP has remained the most trusted political party since 1999, adding that other parties, including All Progressives Congress (APC), operate without “clear ideology or coherent programmes”. The national chairman said the opposition party has a track record of “performance and legacy achievement” in its 16 years of being power. “PDP is the only organic political party in Nigeria that has remained a credible,…
President Muhammadu Buhari has declined assent to the Electoral Amendment Bill over the removal of indirect primaries from the document. The Bill has therefore been returned to the National Assembly. This is even as Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State frowned on the “infringement” of parties’ rights by the National Assembly. Uzodimma, in an exclusive interview with Daily Sun, said the removal of indirect primaries from the proposed amendment would render political parties powerless, especially those with low funds to finance direct primaries. A senator who spoke with our correspondent revealed that the Bill was returned to the Senate and…
