The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed the conviction of a former lawmaker, Farouk Lawan, for receiving $500,000 bribe during a legislative probe into the fuel subsidy regime in 2012. But the decision, on Thursday, came as a narrow approval of Lawan’s conviction, as the court discharged and acquitted the former lawmaker on two of the offences he was earlier jailed for by the lower trial court in June last year. Gunmen on Thursday attacked four banks and a divisional police headquarters in Edo State, Nigeria’s Southsouth. The gunmen laid siege on Uromi town in Esan Northeast Local Government Area of the state. Witnesses said the gunmen got to the town in their numbers and in several vehicles before they attacked the four banks with dynamites. Gunmen have killed two policemen and kidnapped a couple in Anambra State. The incident happened at Okija, in Ihiala Local Government Area of the state on Monday. Our correspondent learnt that the couple were heading for the Owerri Airport, Imo State, when they were attacked. There was disquiet in Enugu on Monday as the State Commissioner for Lands, Chidi Aroh, escaped death by the whiskers as gunmen attacked him and killed two police orderlies. At least, 18 people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after an attack by bandits in Kadaddaba in Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
